Group Raises Money To Honor Jacqueline Cochran

First Woman To Fly In Bendix Trophy Race, Break Sound Barrier

Jacqueline Cochran, one of aviation's legendary female pilots and founder of the Women's Airforce Service Pilots (WASP), was the first female aviator to fly in the Bendix Trophy Race, to make a blind instrument landing, and to exceed the speed of sound.

To honor Cochran, The Coachella Valley (CA) Ninety-Nines chapter, which she started in 1949, is raising money for a bronze statue of the pioneer to erect at Jacqueline Cochran Regional, recently renamed from Thermal/Desert Cities Regional.

A rededication ceremony and airshow are scheduled for November 6. Tax-deductible donations can be mailed to The Coachella Valley Ninety-Nines, c/o Erika Sharp, 73920 Grapevine St., Palm Desert, California, 92260.
