Ten Fatally Injured In Helicopter Mid-Air Collision In Argentina

Two Had Been Olympic Medalists For France, One A Champion Sailor

Two helicopters were involved in a mid-air collision in Argentina Monday, resulting in the fatal injury of all 10 people on board both aircraft.

The aircraft were involved in the filming of the reality show "Dropped", a European survivalist program.

Eight of those fatally injured were French citizens, including two that had won Olympic medals for France. The athletes were part of the film crew, according to Fox News. Swimmer Camille Muffat, 25, won three medals at the 2012 games in London, including a gold in the 400-meter freestyle. Boxer Alexis Vastine, 28, had won a bronze medal in the light welterweight division at the 2008 games in Beijing.

Champion sailor Florence Arthaud, 57, was also on one of the aircraft and was fatally injured.

The aircraft collided at about 5:15 p.m. local time near the town of Villa Castelli in La Rioja province about 730 miles northwest of Buenos Aires, according to La Rioja Secretary of Security Cesar Angulo. The area is on the edge of the Andes Mountains and is sparsely populated. He said one of the aircraft belonged to the La Rioja provincial government, while the other was owned by the neighboring province of Santiago del Estero.
