United Passed Up $10 Million for Gates

"That was a long time ago, about a month ago. We are past that," said Lindy Eichenbaum Lent, spokeswoman for Mayor John Hickenlooper.

She was talking about a proposal that would have given some of United's gates at DEN to Frontier airlines, for a $10 million package of concessions at the airport.

Back while then-Mayor Pena and then-Governor Romer were selling Coloradans a $1.8 billion airport that they didn't need, for what became a nearly $7 billion airport, DIA, as it was then called, kept running into money problems. Just about every time the massive jobs program ran out of cash, the Mayor and the Gov would strongarm United into ponying up another wad of cash or promises. In return, United got near-control of the airport... at least, the choicest gates and best terminals were theirs.

Now, United is the party short on cash, and Denver's trying to redistribute some of United's expensive jewels.

United, apparently, isn't that desperate.
