Death Toll Climbs In Russian Helo Accident

Authorities Say Helicopter Flew Into Terrain

We're learning more about a crash earlier this week involving a Russian Mi-8 helicopter in the North Caucasus region of that country.

Officials say another body has been found at the crash scene... bringing the number of fatalities to 11, out of the 12 officers and three crewmembers onboard the helicopter.

It also appears increasingly likely the helo was NOT shot down my anti-Moscow insurgents fighting Russian forces in the area, as was earlier speculated. Authorities say the helicopter probably flew into the side of a hill in thick cloudcover.

"It seems (the pilot) got disorientated, did not take the right precautionary measures to get out of cloud and clipped the tops of the trees," North Caucasus military commander Alexander Baranov said on NTV television.

As Aero-News reported Monday, insurgent forces -- fighting against Moscow's rule of the troubled region, which also includes Chechnya -- have shot down Russian helicopters in the past.
