Beverage Store Owner Wants To Put Airplane On His Roof

Seeks Zoning Variance For The 'Decoration' From Kennett Township In PA

The owner of a beverage store in Kennett Township in Pennsylvania thinks he has a novel idea to attract business to his store, and to the region as a whole.

Mike Chambers is seeking a zoning variance to place an airplane on the roof of his business, making it appear that it had crashed into the roof.

The Daily Local News reports on its website that Chambers says he thinks the airplane would be "a big attraction to the area," and that people would come to see the airplane, and then maybe buy lunch and shop at other businesses in Kennett.

But the airplane, which he has already purchased from Craigslist, does not meet the township's zoning codes that deal with signs, so he's asked for the variance. He told the paper that he owns the building, so he won't do something "junky." He has talked to a local artist who plans to give the display a 3-D effect, with pieces appearing to be flying off the roof. "This will look really good," he said.

But for now, the airplane is sitting in parts at his father's house in Lancaster County PA. The type of airplane was not reported, but the engine and interior have been removed.

Chambers estimates that getting the variance will cost about $5,000, including attorney's fees.

He hopes to have the project completed by the end of the year.
