CubCrafters Completes Required Tests For Sport Cub LSA Cert... And Then Some

Do NOT Try This At Home!

Representatives with CubCrafters told ANN last week that the company has completed all flight testing for its new Sport Cub, and that it has all data in hand for the aircraft's final LSA certification... and quite a bit more.

"These flight tests represent the third and final component of our overall Sport Cub aircraft test program," said CubCrafters Vice-President Todd Simmons.

The company expects to receive LSA certification for the Sport Cub on July 7.

Simmons noted the company performed rigorous testing on the aircraft, above and beyond the requirements for light-sport certification."...[T]he testing protocol that we have put the Sport Cub through -- comprehensive wing, fuselage and now flight tests -- is not an LSA certification requirement," Simmons said.

Indeed -- light sport planes are not required to demonstrate spin proficiency (above)... or the ability to perform a victory roll (below). Needless to say, CubCrafters admonishes pilots to NOT attempt to duplicate those manuevers.

Company president Jim Richmond said CubCrafters held the Sport Cub to the same test protocol the company used in receiving Part 23 certification of its 180-horsepower "Top Cub" two years ago.

"Only actual testing proves that the design and performance characteristics -- and the analysis -- that the computer tells us are right," Richmond said. "The entire CubCrafters team is justifiably proud of the Sport Cub test program, and we are glad to share the results with our customers and potential customers."

Founded in 1980, CubCrafters is located at Yakima Air Terminal/McAllister Field Airport (YKM) in Yakima, WA. In addition to its Sport Cub and Top Cub models, CubCrafters also rebuilds classic Piper Cubs.
