Plane Stolen From Florida Keys Found In Cuba

There's A Buffett Song In Here Somewhere...

A Cessna 172 stolen this weekend from Marathon Airport in the Florida Keys has been found... in Cuba.

The FBI learned on Tuesday the aircraft -- and its two passengers -- are in Cuban custody. Agents report Randall "David" Ray Franklin flew off with the stolen C-172 from Marathon, and took an as yet unidentified 11-year-old boy with him.

US Agents in Cuba say local authorities contacted them when Franklin landed there, due to what he claimed were mechanical problems.

Cuban authorities say Franklin offered false birth certificates as identification for himself and the boy... but fingerprints forwarded to the FBI positively identified him.

The Associated Press reports the boy's mother lives in Mexico. Authorities speculated the theft and subsequent flight south might be related to a custody battle.

William Jones, the Cessna's owner, reported his plane stolen to the county sheriff's office on September 30, after flying down from New York earlier in the week.

An FBI spokeswoman told the AP the agency is working with the Cuban government to get Jones' airplane back.
