A Second Garmin Employee And Another Person Were Injured In The Incident
A man who allegedly shot two Garmin employees, killing one last Wednesday night has been charged with first-degree murder in Kansas.
The Kansas City Star reports that the alleged shooter, identified as 51-year-old Adam W. Purinton, allegedly shot 32-year-old Srinivas Kuchibhotla, 32; Alok Madasani, 32, of Overland Park who were part of the Garmin Aviation Systems Engineering team. Both are of Indian descent. A third man, 24-year-old Ian Grillot of Grandview, was also injured.
Kuchibhotla was taken to a hospital where he died of his injuries.
The shooting occurred at Austin's Bar and Grill in Olathe, KS. According to the report, Purinton shouted "get out of my country" at the men before opening fire.
Grillot was shot after he tried to intervene on behalf of the two Garmin engineers. In a news conference. Johnson County District Attorney Steve Howe announced that he would be filing the first-degree murder charges against Purinton. Federal authorities are investigating to determine if the shooting should be classified as a hate crime.
Purinton reportedly fled the bar on foot after the shooting. He allegedly told a bartender at an Applebee's in Clinton, MO that he "needed a place to hide" because he had just shot two Middle Eastern men.
Printon is reportedly a Navy veteran, IT specialist, former pilot and air traffic controller. He appeared before a judge in Henry County, MO where bond was set at $2 million, and he waived his right to fight extradition back to Kansas.
