ANN Special Feature: General Aviation Takes On User Fees At AirVenture 07.26.06
If you're no stranger to these podcasts... then you're no stranger to the concept of user fees in aviation. It's a concept with which Canadians are already familiar... as user fees have been enacted in that airspace... and are now on the increase, much to the dismay of Canadian pilots. Here in the US... the aviation community is sharply divided over user fees. The Air Transport Association, which represents 19 different domestic airlines... favors the idea of charging business and general aviation users of the national airspace. Former Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta went to great lengths to say he doesn't want to see GA hit with user fees. But opponents are worried... once that Pandora's box is opened... general aviation will live under the constant threat of a pay-as-you-go system. Here at the EAA's AirVenture 2006 in Oshkosh Tuesday... representatives of GAMA, AOPA, NBAA and others got together to talk about what they see as the user fee threat. ANN's Mark Sletten talked with three of those aviation leaders... beginning with GAMA President Pete Bunce.
