Fourth Person To Lead The International Space University Since
Its Founding
After more than 7 years as President of the International Space
University, Dr. Michael Simpson will leave his post on September 1
to join the staff of the Secure World Foundation of Superior,
Colorado.
Characterized by enrolment growth, new program development,
increased international presence, enhanced research facilities, and
improved financial health, Dr. Simpson's presidency is the longest
since the school was founded on the MIT campus 24 years ago. "These
have not been easy years, but the ISU team has accomplished so
much," Simpson said reflecting on his time at ISU. "It is
increasingly rare to find a major space endeavor that doesn't have
an ISU graduate deeply involved."
In the school's 24 year history it has graduated over 3,100
students from its professional and Masters Degree programs. More
than 1,000 others have benefited from its shorter professional
development programs. True to the school's international
commitment, ISU's students have come from over 100 countries.
Asked why he would chose to leave now when things seem to be
working smoothly at the University, Dr. Simpson said "there's
enough of the sailor in me to know that it is generally better to
change command when the seas are relatively calm. As for the
timing," he continued, "after spending 12 of the last 14 years
living far from most of my family, I now have an opportunity to do
work I love close to more of the people I love. That's a pretty
powerful draw."
Following his departure from ISU, Dr. Simpson will assume the
position of Senior Program Officer at the Secure World Foundation.
He and his wife Carol will reside in Boulder, CO.
