Airborne-Unmanned 11.12.19: Drone Delivery $$, UK Regs, Alaska BVLOS

Also: Drones Fight Fires, Wayne Baker Joins DJI, DroneTracker 4.1, Autonomous Delivery Robot Service

UPS Flight Forward Inc. (UPSFF) and CVS Pharmacy Inc. have successfully completed the first revenue-generating, residential drone deliveries of medical prescriptions from a CVS pharmacy to customers in Cary, North Carolina.

One of the people on the receiving end of these landmark deliveries was a CVS customer with limited mobility, which makes it hard for them to make the trip to the store to pick up their prescription. Utilizing a Matternet M2 UAS, the flights launched from a CVS store in Cary. Once the UAS reached its destinations, it lowered the packages to the ground using a cable and a winch while hovering about 20 feet over the properties. The UK CAA has introduced a requirement for drone operators to register their aircraft, and the process includes an online test. The registration is about $12. Registrants are required to take an online education course and pass a test to qualify to fly their drones. After the requirements have been satisfied, the drone owner will receive a unique code that must be displayed on the aircraft so that it can be easily identified. Drone operators must also be in possession of a flyer ID. To be granted the document, they must pass a theory test. Kids under the age of 13 may fly drones if they pass the test, but a parent of guardian must register the aircraft for them. The University of Alaska’s Unmanned Aircraft Systems Integration Pilot Program (UAS IPP) conducted the first-ever ‘Beyond-Visual-Line-of-Sight’ (BVLOS) drone operation without visual observers, an industry milestone. After a safe and successful 3.87-mile mission to inspect the Trans-Alaska Pipeline infrastructure, a cohort of leading UAS organizations and technology partners earned permission to fly the same mission without a human visual observer. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne-Unmanned!!!
