Qantas, Solena Fuels Look Into Bio-Fuel Plant In Sydney

Would Convert Commercial Waste Into Jet Fuel

A plant that would convert household waste such as food scraps, grass clippings, and agricultural castoffs into jet fuel is under consideration by Qanatas and Solena Fuels. The process would be similar to one used to convert coal to jet fuel at a plant South Africa.

Modeled after a plant that is scheduled to come on line in London in three years, the Australian facility is in the early planning stages. The Wall Street Journal reports that a spokesperson for Qantas said they expect to have completed a business case for the plant within the next year.

Qantas is a member of the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Users Group, and as such is "closely involved" in a "road map" study exploring a domestic sustainable fuel industry.
