Gone West: Lt. Gen. Harry Goodall, USAF (Ret)

Victim In Small Plane Crash

Retired USAF Lt. Gen. Harry Goodall died when the small aircraft he was piloting crashed shortly after takeoff from McGregor Municipal Airport around 8:00am September 2, 2006. He was the sole occupant.

Andrew Guy, a manager for Aurora Aviation, told the Associated Press Goodall made an attempt to return to the airport shortly after taking off. FAA and NTSB investigators were on the scene Saturday, but had no explanation for why Goodall aborted his departure.

Goodall was part-owner of a Beech Model 95, but it's not known if that is the aircraft he was flying on Saturday.

General Goodall had a distinguished career with the USAF. At one point the President of the United States appointed him deputy US Commissioner of the US-Soviet Strategic Arms Limitation Talks Standing Consultative Commission, the final six months of which he served as commissioner of the US component of the commission with the temporary rank of Ambassador.

He was a command pilot with over 4000 hours in various fighter and special operations aircraft. He earned the Bronze Star and the Distinguished Flying Cross for action over North Viet Nam during that conflict.

Lt. Gen. Harry Goodall, pilot, patriot and American Hero. ANN salutes you, Sir, with heartfelt condolences to your family.
