Orlando City Commission Takes Initial Vote On New Drone Regs

But Drone Supporters Say The Regulations May Quell Growth Of The Industry

The Orlando, FL City Commission on Monday took a first vote on its proposed new drone regulations, passing the rules unanimously.

The ordinance would establish a permitting process for operating drones within the Orlando city limits, and set penalties for those who violate the law when enacted. Police say they need the regulations to restrict drone use around major venues in the city, as well as events that draw large numbers of people. The law would also restrict the use of drones around schools.

The permits would cost $20, and fines could range up to $400.

Television station WESH reports that several people attended the meeting to oppose the ordinance as written. Among them was Abel Almaguer, one of the country's leading drone racers. He said that the regulations could extinguish an economic spark in the city.

Orlando photographer Edward Amendola said that his primary concern was that he could lose business if there are too many places where he is unable to fly.

A second vote will be taken on the ordinance on January 9. If it passes again, it will go into effect immediately.
