UAV Bill In Maine Would Criminalize Some Flights

Would Prohibit Flights Over Land Without Permission Of The Property Owner

A bill introduced in the Maine legislature would make it a crime to fly a UAV over someone's property without their express permission.

The bill ... "An Act To Prohibit Flying over Land with Drones without Written Permission from the Landowner" ... states that a person "may not operate an unmanned aerial vehicle over the land of another without written permission from the landowner."It sets a penalty of not less than $500 for a violation of the law.

The bill, sponsored by Representative Russell Black, had been referred to the Judiciary committees in both the Maine house and senate on February 24th. It was scheduled for a hearing Tuesday.

UAVUS member Bill Lord was scheduled to testify before the committee. The Association said that similar legislation is pending in other states. "This is not a Maine-only issue," the group said in an email blast.
