Aero-TV: Motivating Forces - Continental Motors Evolves

Legacy Manufacturer Continues with New Ownership and Development of Alternative Fuels

Rhett Ross is a veteran engine guy with an engineering background who became president of Teledyne Continental Motors in October, 2007. In the years since, he's weathered the shift to new ownership by China's AVIC International aerospace conglomerate, and looks forward to growing the company's sales and presence in Asia, as well as pioneering diesel and other alternative fuel technologies.

Teledyne Technologies, in selling the engine-maker, became focused on electronics. Addressing what could have been a concern in the wake of the transition, Ross noted that the change in ownership does not appear to have caused any loss of confidence among airframe manufacturers. He adds that under the new ownership, both engineering and production staffs have increased.

Of the company's direction and image under AVIC, Ross says, "I don't think anybody views us any differently. We continue to focus on what's been our bread and butter for the last couple years, which is driving to improve and provide exceptional customer service."

Regarding growth of the aviation market in China, Ross shares his perspective after a recent two-week visit.

"The excitement there is just palpable, and the opportunities there are just extraordinary. I think they are doing it the right way, the CAAC is being appropriately cautious to ensure they provide public safety. I think the companies are realizing this is not an inexpensive venture...at the same time I think they recognize it's a business they have to have. Freight movement, passenger movement...I was in 'small cities' in China and they're still a million-plus population...yes, it is a great opportunity, and I chuckle to myself all the time at the advantages of my new ownership."
