Portland, OR Man Hurt In BASE Jumping Accident

Hit Rock Wall After Becoming Tangled In His Parachute

A Portland, OR BASE jumper was injured in an accident on Tower Rock, a 3,300-foot formation near Randle, WA.

Television station KGW reports that witnesses said 38-year-old Ron King's parachute opened, but became tangled on his body, and he hit the rock face several times before the canopy fully deployed.

King was jumping with friends who hiked back up the mountain and found him bleeding with multiple leg fractures. One of the jumpers hiked out of the area and called 911.

Bee Gongcalves, a friend of King's who had jumped just prior to his attempt, said King broke his heel and leg, but otherwise there were just some scratches and a "bruised ego," according to the report.

King was evacuated from the area by a U.S. Navy helicopter. Goncalves said King is an experienced BASE jumper who knew how to keep the accident from being worse. She said she thinks he will fully recover.
