Academy of Model Aeronautics Hosting Scale Aerobatic World Championships

Pilots And Teams From 19 Countries Visit The International Aeromodeling Center In Muncie, IN To Compete In World Competition

The U.S. is hosting the 2018 International Miniature Aerobatic Club (IMAC) World Championships this week at the International Aeromodeling Center (IAC), the headquarters of the Academy of Model Aeronautics, in Muncie, IN. The second world competition for the scale aerobatics discipline will bring more than 80 pilots from 19 countries to compete for individual and team honors.

The competition began Tuesday with the opening ceremony and will conclude on September 8 with an awards ceremony and banquet. The public is welcome to attend throughout the week. IMAC Operations Manager Doug Pilcher stated, “This is just like the Olympics, the Olympics of scale aerobatics.” The U.S. finished in first place during the inaugural International Miniature Aerobatic Club (IMAC) World Championship in 2014 and would love to repeat the victory. Local support would be appreciated. Much like the Olympics, the opening ceremonies brings all the countries together displaying camaraderie among each country represented. “The more spectators the better,” Doug said.

Scale aerobatics is the aerobatic operation of a radio-controlled scale model of a full-size aerobatic competition airplane. Although other disciplines within the radio control community fly aerobatics, the requirement for scale aerobatics is that the model be replicas of types known to have competed in International Aerobatic Club (IAC) competition. Those who are interested in competing in this discipline have a wide choice of competitive airplanes from which to choose in both kit and ready-to-fly versions.

Team USA 2018 has 12 members representing different classes including Unlimited, Advanced, Sportsmen, Intermediate, and Freestyle.

The competition would not be possible without IMAC – International Miniature Aerobatic Club. Originally started as a Special Interest Group under AMA, the International Miniature Aerobatic Club (IMAC) has grown to represent and organize scale aerobatic competition on a global level. IMAC is a nonprofit organization focusing on pilot education and maintenance of rules and guidelines governing the sport.
