Franklin County, NC Airport Manager Fatally Injured In Accident

Was The Only Person Aboard The Cessna 150 When It Went Down

The manager of the Triangle North Executive Airport (KLHZ) in Louisburg, NC was fatally injured Saturday when the Cessna 150C he was flying impacted terrain in a field east of Louisburg.

The News & Observer newspaper of Raleigh, NC reports that Stephen Merritt was the only person aboard the airplane, which was registered to Bahamas Habitat, which is based at KLHZ. The organization provides humanitarian aid to people in the Bahamas and Mexico, according to its website. Merritt was the president of the organization.

The plane went down Saturday afternoon about 1420 local time. Along with being airport manager, he was a long-time flight instructor. He was named airport manager in 2010.

The airport is owned by the county, and recently received notification from the state of a commitment of $11 million for a runway expansion and new hangars.

The news of Merritt's accident was released Monday afternoon by Franklin County clerk Kristen King.
