Pilot Lost In SoCal PA28 Accident

Aircraft Impacts Interstate Median

Things are returning to normal along the I-15 corridor in southern California, after morning rush-hour traffic was snarled by an overnight plane crash that claimed the pilot's life.

The Associated Press reports a Piper PA28 impacted the median separating the north- and southbound lanes of the interstate at the crest of Cajon Pass at about 0100 Friday morning.

The plane's pilot was in contact with ATC shortly before controllers lost radio and radar contact, according to FAA Western Region spokesman Ian Gregor.

The aircraft departed from an unknown airport, en route to Henderson, NV. The accident was called in shortly after 0600, San Bernardino County Fire Department Supervisor Karen Humphreys said.

There was no post-impact fire. The pilot was found dead in the wreckage.

Investigators are on scene to determine the sequence of events that led to the fatal accident.
