While at Sun ‘n Fun 2015, ANN CEO and Editor-In-Chief, Jim Campbell, asked Tom Bowen, who is the CEO of Mooney International, to talk about the challenges he faced when bringing the legacy Mooney back into production.
Bowen started off by describing the challenge this way; he said, “It would have been easier to start off with a piece of dirt and build a new factory and go through all the steps from scratch.” From this statement, he moves on to explain how the rebirth of the Mooney is also a rebirth of the manufacturing process.
He describes their process as “lean manufacturing,” and the video backs that up by showing the factory in operation as an efficient and modern business. Bowen and Jim also reminisce about those in aviation who cherish the Mooney product and expect nothing but the best. They are referred to as “Mooneyacs,” and one brief scene in the video begs the question of; is it possible to love an airplane too much?
This video does a great job of showing us how a legacy airplane is brought into the future.
