Confirmed By Senate Last Week
The United States Senate
on Thursday approved by voice vote the nomination of Michael
Jackson as Deputy Secretary of the US Department of Homeland
Security (DHS).
Jackson, who replaces the retired James M. Loy, previously held
a similar position at the Department of Transportation (DOT) under
Secretary Norman Mineta. At the DOT, Jackson oversaw the
development of the Transportation Security Administration and its
eventual transition to DHS. Jackson also has a diverse resume
of experience in the private sector, including employment with
Lockheed Martin and the American Trucking Association.
“We are pleased the Senate has acted quickly to approve
Michael Jackson’s nomination as Deputy Secretary,”
National Air Transportation Association (NATA) president James K.
Coyne stated today. “With many vacancies in the
leadership of the Department, quickly confirming Mr. Jackson will
allow the DHS to move forward with greater stability. I would
also like to thank the leadership of the Senate Committee on
Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, Senators Susan Collins
and Joseph Lieberman, for shepherding Michael’s nomination
through the Senate.
“While at the DOT, Michael was a major contributor in the
effort to re-open Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport to
charter and general aviation operations. NATA is hopeful that
he will continue his efforts to re-open the airport in his new
position at DHS. We look forward to working with Mr. Jackson
and Secretary Michael Chertoff on this and other issues,”
Coyne concluded.
