RAF Trainer Jet Down In Wales

Pilot Ejected Before Accident

ANN REALTIME REPORTING 04.20.07 1115 EDT: A British Royal Air Force Hawk I trainer crashed Friday afternoon in north Wales, and rescue operations are now underway for the pilot, who authorities confirm was able to eject before the accident.

Ministry of Defense officials said the aircraft came down at Mona, in Anglesey.

"I can confirm that a Hawk aircraft has crashed at RAF Mona, which is a small satellite airfield connected to RAF Valley," said Squadron Leader Mark Byrne, a spokesperson for RAF Valley. "One person was on board but we do not know the extent of the pilot's injuries at this time."

"We will not speculate about the cause of the accident as an investigation will be carried out to establish what has happened," Byrne added.

The two-seat Hawk was first put into service in 1976. It is used by RAF Valley for advanced pilot training, with the Hawk T1A used for weapons and tactical training.
