North Carolina's Wilgrove Airport To Close In April

Flight School On The Field Shuttered In January

Wilgrove Airport in North Carolina's Mecklenburg county will close for good sometime in April.

The airport, which is the second largest in the county, has been sold for development, according to a report from the Mint Hill Times. Wilgrove Aviation and Flight School shuttered in January.

Airport manager Alan Cobb, who learned to fly at the airport, said that everyone has to be off the field by the end of april.

Cobb said that it is not yet known what will take the airport's place, but he speculates it will likely be some kind of residential development.

The walls of the business office are still decorated with the shirttails of pilots who completed their first solo flights at Wilgrove. He said traditions like these will eventually be completely lost as small airports continue to be overtaken for development. "You don't see many of these places anymore. When this one goes away, it won't get replaced. It will be missed," he said.
