AMA Drone Report 01.30.20: FAA Kills NPRM Extension, UAVs v Pythons, NTSB

Also: AMA Government Affairs Update, Remote ID Rule, FAA Knowledge Tests, DJI v DOI

Inconceivably; the FAA has failed to listen to some of the most expert and authoritative voices, in aviation, once again.

Earlier this month, AMA, EAA and several other groups requested that the FAA extend the official comment period on the proposed rule for remote identification of UAS (Remote ID). AMA has been informed that the FAA has declined this request. The comment period will end on March 2, 2020. Fighting for a better remote ID rule continues to be AMA’s top priority. To achieve the best possible outcome, they request that everyone in the model aviation community help. Please submit a formal comment to the FAA ASAP, before the deadline on March 2, 2020. A bill filed in the Florida State Senate would allow two state agencies to use drones to combat the state's invasive Burmese python problem in the Everglades. The bill would create an exemption to current law that currently prohibits state agencies from collecting images using drones on private land. The bill would authorize the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the Florida Forest Service to use the aircraft to work towards eradicating the snakes. Senator Bill Albritton said LiDAR-equipped drones might be able to help identify pythons, which are difficult to find in the Everglades. He said they could also be used to locate an invasive Asian fern that is destroying Florida's native vegetation. The tragedy that took the lives of nine people over the past weekend, including Kobe Bryant and his daughter GiGi, is being investigated aggressively, professionally and with the use of drones. The NTSB has been an enthusiastic adopter of drones as investigative tools. And their use of these aircraft over a widespread, hilly area provides a safe and useful tool to photograph, shoot video and provide other data about an accident scene that will get much scrutiny in the coming months. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of the AMA Drone Report!!!
