Airborne 04.08.16: NEW TBM930, Swift Fuels, Rotax 915iS Flies!

Also: Senate FAA Reauthorization, Sporty’s Learn To Fly Course, WingX Pro Update, Spaceport America

Daher has unveiled the expanded selection of its TBM very fast turboprop aircraft family, which now consists of the TBM 900 and the TBM 930 version.

As a function of this unveiling, Daher’s TBM 930 made its North American debut at Sun ‘n Fun. Daher has introduced the e-copilot function on Model Year 2016 aircraft for both the TBM 900 and TBM 930, which incorporates, among other things, and angle of attack indicator and electronic stabilization and protection that prevents against underspeed and overspeed conditions. It also includes an emergency descent mode which places the aircraft in automatic descent to 15,000-feet in the event of cabin depressurization and lack of pilot response. As the aviation industry continues to move toward a drop-in replacement for 100 low lead avgas, Swift Fuels has launched a new unleaded aviation fuel with a motor octane number, referred to as MON 94... They call it UL 94. In a news conference at Sun 'n Fun, Swift Fuels CEO Chris D'Acosta said that the new fuel is acceptable for about 65 percent of the general aviation airplanes in service today. Not all first flight stories are about airplanes. In this case, the big news is about a new engine that Rotax is bringing to the market for light aircraft. The new Rotax 915 iS is bound to make an impact in the light airplane and helicopter regime. During the press conference at Sun ‘n Fun, Rotax gave an update on the development of their 135 horsepower Rotax 915 iS, a 4- stroke, 4-cylinder turbocharged aircraft engine. The engine is scheduled for serial production second half of 2017. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
