Passenger Sues Airline For Burn Suffered During E-Cig Charging Cycle

Says Carrier Should Not Have Allowed Him To Recharge The Device In Flight

A passenger who suffered third degree burns on a Norwegian Air Shuttle flight from London To New York while recharging his electronic cigarette has sued the airlines, saying it is responsible for its injuries.

The New York Post reports that the plaintiff is Eric T. Wiberg, an author who resides in Connecticut. He said in his filing that he had plugged the device into an outlet on the aircraft, placed it in the seatback pocket, and fell asleep. When he awoke, smoke was pouring from the pocket. When he reached into the pocket to get it out and throw it into a bucket of water held by the cabin crew, he suffered severe burns to his hands.

Wiberg filed the suit saying that the airline should not have allowed him to bring the e-cig onto the airplane or let him charge it. He is seeking unspecified damages.

Norwegian would not comment on the story, but said that the U.S. DOT had banned the devices from all flights in March.
