Fabian Roars Across Bermuda, Closes Airport

Airport Closed Until Damage Assessed

Four people are feared dead and an unknown number injured after Hurricane Fabian, the most powerful storm to hit Bermuda in decades, roared across the British colony Friday night. Lt. Wayne Caines, spokesman for the British Army's Bermuda Regiment, told ANN the airport at St. Georges was closed and would remain so until an assessment team could scour the facility for wreckage and debris.

Caines told ANN winds of up to 120 nautical miles an hour tore at the island's airport. He said the roof of the country's emergency operations center was blown off by the storm.

Two police officers and two civilians were reportedly swept from the road that connects the airport to the main island into the sea. "The surge and debris are making it incredibly difficult to do search and rescue operations," said Bermuda government spokesman John Burchall.
