Aero-TV At OSH21: Building 5G Air To Ground Network With Gogo Business Aviation

Mark Sander Speaks To ANN At Oshkosh About the 5G Future

Gogo Business Aviation has been building air-to-ground networks for around twenty years. Right now they are working on 5G network construction, with plans to build about 150 ground sites that will overlay their existing sites and begin to work simultaneously together.

“We are a network operator for aviation exclusively. We started with our first-generation network about twenty years ago, then in 2008 we built up our 3G network, our air to ground network, which is the one that became popular with business aviation,” Sander explains. “We have installed that in thousands of aircraft up to this point. About four years ago we built our 4G network, with the advanced product line, that gave our customers an incredible boost in connectivity options and speed, and right now we are in the process of building our 5G network,” Sander explains.

“As a network operator and a network builder, we know how to do this. This is the 4th time we have gone out and built a nationwide network, exclusively for aircraft in flight, and we are doing that right now on 5G technology. We will have that out towards the second half of next year,” he says.

Considering the success of the air to ground networks Gogo has built, ANN wanted to talk about satellite connectivity.

“We have been in that business for some time,” Sander reveals. “We are constantly looking for what is next in these markets, so there is a lot of new technology that's emerging in satellite and we are in the process of evaluating that very carefully because there is a global market out there, not just a US market. We have been servicing that global market for some time and we are very interested in doing that in the future. What those technologies will be in the next 2-5 years is very exciting,” he says.

Gogo is very specific in the aviation market and does about 80,000 internet sessions a year, which gives them great insight into what their customers need now, and in the future.
