Airborne 04.26.19: Tamarack Emergency AD, Tree Landing, D-Day Squadron

Also: Skydiver's Lost & Found, Sikorsky S-70 Training, F-16 Production Line, Commercial Drone Delivery

EASA has issued an emergency AD for Cessna Citation jets with Tamarack ATLAS active winglets installed. According to the AD (2019-0086-E), the active load alleviation system (ATLAS), when operational, deflects the Tamarack active control surfaces (TACS) on the outboard wings.

Recently, occurrences have been reported in which ATLAS appears to have malfunctioned, causing upset events where, in some cases, the pilots had difficulty to recover the airplane to safe flight. Investigation continues to determine the cause(s) for the reported events. This condition, if not corrected, could lead to loss of control of the airplane. There are off-airport landings... and there are REALLY off-airport landings. The 78-year-old pilot of a Piper PA-18 Super Cub escaped injury when the plane developed engine problems during a flight in Idaho and settled in the top of a 60-foot-tall giant white fir. The pilot took off from Challis and was intending to land at McCall Airport when the engine began to lose power. The Valley County Sheriff's department said that it was notified at 8:19 p.m. of a SPOT locator beacon activation. At 8:42 p.m., it received notice of an emergency position radio beacon. The pilot also called 911 to report that he’d crashed into a tree. The D-Day Squadron has announced the starting point for the Squadron’s journey to Europe over the original "Blue Spruce" route  to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Invasion of Normandy. Aircraft will depart from Waterbury-Oxford Airport in Oxford Connecticut on May 19th 2019, but there will be a full week of activities to kick off this event, including a special Squadron flyover of the Statue of Liberty. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
