Uses Iridium Short Burst Data Mode
By ANN Correspondent Juan Jimènez
Blue Sky Network, a provider of satellite
communication systems for aircraft and best known for the system
they installed in the New Spirit of St. Louis (a lightly-modified
Lanciar Columbia) for its Atlantic crossing, has announced two new
products scheduled to start shipping in April.
The D-1000 Satcom System is designed to provide messaging and
GPS-based flight following data to/from ground stations through the
Internet using a web interface and BSN's Communication Hub. The
system uses the new Sebring 9522 L-Band transceiver, which is
designed to use the new Iridium Short Burst Data mode to implement
packet switching.
Using this new mode and BSN's D-1000 in proxy
configuration, you can connect your computer or PDA in flight to
the system using a standard Ethernet cable to transmit and receive
information. The data is relayed through the Iridium system to
BSN's communications hub, which decodes and formats the information
and then forwards it to its destination through the Internet,
either on the aircraft or on the ground. The ground portion of the
system requires nothing more than a connection to the Internet and
a computer with a web browser.
In addition to messaging, the D-1000 can be interfaced to your
GPS to transmit flight following data anywhere in the world and
allow anyone to track your progress in flight with any computer or
PDA connected to the Internet. The unit also has several serial
RS-232 interfaces which can be configured to receive real time data
from loggers and transmit onboard sensor information.
BSN has also announced the new C-1000A system,
which is similar to the original C-1000, but now offers the ability
to connect standard telephone handsets with RJ-11 jacks to the
system, both at the console or anywhere in the aircraft by using
additional jacks in the wiring harness. What this means is that you
can use standard phone handsets for the cabin, for example, and
save a significant amount of money by not having to buy the more
advanced Iridium handsets.
