AD: Bombardier, Inc., Airplanes

AD NUMBER: 2020-03-21

PRODUCT: Certain Bombardier, Inc., Model BD-700-1A10 and BD-700-1A11 airplanes.

ACTION: Final rule; request for comments.

SUMMARY:  This AD was prompted by reports that main landing gear (MLG) trailing arm assemblies were found with compromised paint finish and corrosion on the axle bore inner diameters due to improper removal of contaminants during manufacturing.

This AD requires a one-time inspection to determine if an affected MLG trailing arm assembly is installed, repetitive detailed inspections of the inner diameter of the affected MLG trailing arm assembly axle bore for surface finish discrepancies, corrective actions if necessary, and eventual replacement of primer and paint and application of corrosion preventive compound on the inner diameter of all affected MLG trailing arm assembly axle bores, which terminates the repetitive inspections.

DATES: This AD becomes effective March 12, 2020. The FAA must receive comments on this AD by April 13, 2020.

COST: The FAA estimates that this AD affects 49 airplanes of U.S. registry. Operators may incur the following costs in order to comply with this AD:

Required Actions

  • Labor: Up to 33 work-hours × $85 per hour = Up to $2,805.
  • Parts: Up to $200,000.
  • Cost per airplane: Up to $202,805.

On Condition Costs

  • Labor: Up to 20 work-hours × $85 per hour = Up to $1,700.
  • Parts: Up to $200,000.
  • Cost per airplane: Up to $201,700.

According to the manufacturer, some or all of the costs of this AD may be covered under warranty, thereby reducing the cost impact on affected individuals.
