Protesters Attempt To Close O'Hare International Airport

Expressing Concerns About Gun Violence In The City

Multiple protesters were arrested Monday during an unsuccessful attempt to close Chicago's O'Hare International Airport over gun violence in the city.

USA Today reports that the protesters, who were heavily outnumbered by police, gathered at a ramp that leads to the Kennedy Expressway near the airport. The ramp was closed by police, and demonstrators were warned that if they ventured onto the highway they would be arrested.

The protest was organized by the Rev. Gregory Livingston, who was among those arrested. He is a pastor at the New Hope Baptist Church on the west side of the city and a leader of the Coalition for a New Chicago. Among his demands is that Mayor Rahm Emanuel resign.

Chicago has seen more than 1,400 murders and 6,200 shootings in 2016 and 2017, according to the report. So far this year, there have been 368 murders in Chicago, which is a sharp decrease over the same period last year.

Livingston said on Monday that it is unfortunate that police in Chicago can come out in force for a peaceful protest, but are unable to fight crime in the city's neighborhoods.
