Johnson Named New ERAU President

Dr. John P. Johnson To Head Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

Dr. John P. Johnson has been selected by the Board of Trustees of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University as the school’s fifth president, effective immediately. Dr. Johnson has served as the interim president of the university since November 2005 while also serving as the provost and chief academic officer, a position he held since joining Embry-Riddle in December 2003.

“After a nationwide search in which we interviewed many fine candidates, we concluded that Dr. Johnson is the best person for the job,” said Jim O’Connor, chairman of Embry-Riddle’s Board of Trustees.

“During his terms as provost and interim president he has impressed us with his focus on our academic mission and service to students, his relationship with the faculty, and his financial management of the university. We have complete confidence that Embry-Riddle will enjoy continued growth and success under his leadership.”

Dr. Johnson will take charge of an institution with over 32,000 residential students and adult learners on campuses in Florida and Arizona and at 130 teaching centers around the world. Under Dr. Johnson’s leadership the university expanded its research activity, established new degree programs in mechanical and electrical engineering, and global security and intelligence studies, and is developing a global strategy to bring its aviation and aerospace expertise overseas.

“I’m grateful to the Board of Trustees and the Embry-Riddle community for their trust in me,” said Dr. Johnson. “I look forward to the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.”

Before joining Embry-Riddle, Dr. Johnson was the provost and vice president for academic affairs at Texas A&M University, Texarkana, and served as dean at the Medical University of South Carolina and at Northern Kentucky University. He received his B.A and M.S. degrees from Florida State University and his Ph.D. from Kent State University.
