Airborne 10.09.19: 1st US-Built Sling TSi, All-Female EVA, V-22 Record

Also: B-17 Accident Survivor Fund, 1st Female Fighter Pilot, 2019 TBMOPA Convention, Gulfstream Announcement

A cool little bit of sport aviation history was made last week as the first US-Built Sling TSi was signed off for flight test in Southern California after 8 months of hard work by its owner at The Airplane Factory’s Builder Assist facility.

Serial Entrepreneur, Algen Albritten, 32, of Jacksonville, FL, took up temporary residence in California where he worked on his Rotax 915iS powered Sling TSi from its delivery in February of 2019, until it’s sign-off by an FAA DAR last week. Albritten is a new pilot, starting first with ultralights -- when he got the SportPlane bug big-time, and spent months scouring the kit industry before finally deciding on the TSi once the 141HP 915is bird became available. An ISS EVA originally scheduled in March has been rescheduled for October 21 now that there are space suits that fit the astronauts are available on the station. The mission will be the first to be conducted by an all-female EVA team; astronauts Christina Koch and Jessica Meir. Initially, Koch was to have performed the spacewalk with astronaut Anne McClain, who has since completed her stay on the ISS. McClain herself scrubbed the mission when it was determined that there were not two appropriate space suits available for the EVA. The V-22 fleet of tiltrotor aircraft has topped the 500,000 flight hour milestone. More than 375 Ospreys logged the hours, including the US Air Force CV-22 and the US Marine Corps MV-22. The V-22 Osprey is the world’s only production tiltrotor aircraft, enabling servicemen and women to conduct diverse missions throughout the most difficult operating environments. Most recently, the aircraft deployed to assist relief efforts in the Bahamas following Hurricane Dorian. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
