Navy: X-47B Made Decision To Abort Third Carrier Landing

Aircraft 'Knew It Was A Test' According To Navy Brass

A U.S. Navy Admiral speaking at the AUVSI conference in Washington, D.C. last week said that the experimental X-47B unmanned system made an autonomous decision to abort its final landing attempt aboard the USS George H.W. Bush last month because it "knew it was doing a test."

Admiral Mathias Winter said in an interview that the aircraft made the decision based on a number of internal factors and redirected itself to abort the landing. Navy officials are still examining a faulty circuit board removed from the aircraft, but Winter said the aircraft could have easily safely landed on the carrier had it not been a test flight. He said the X-47B's backup systems were working normally.

Winter said the Navy is currently preparing an RFP for an operational carrier-based UAS, known as UCLASS. The full RFP should be out in the second quarter of next year, with a contract announcement coming in the first quarter of FY2015.
