Drone Package Delivery A Reality In The U.K.

Amazon Makes First Legal Package Delivery By Drone

Amazon made its first legal delivery of a package by drone last week.

The test delivery took place December 7 in the U.K., according to a report from USA Today. The package was delivered within five miles of Amazon's Cambridgeshire drone testing facility with the approval of Britain's CAA.

Once it has compiled and analyzed safety data, Amazon says it plans to begin delivery services in rural areas of packages up to five pounds in 30 minutes or less.

The package contained an Amazon Fire TV device and a bag of popcorn. It arrived 13 minutes after the customer clicked "order".

The test group is small, consisting of two customers who live near the testing facility. In the coming months, the company says it hopes to add dozens of customers who live within a few miles of the test site. There will be no additional charge for drone delivery.

The deliveries will depend on weather conditions and can only be completed during daylight hours.

Amazon's plans are for delivery first in rural areas, expanding to suburban towns and eventually major cities.
