Another FL Aircraft Accident Claims Five

Piper Aztec Disappears From Radar Off Fort Lauderdale Coast

A Piper Aztec disappeared from radar during a flight from Fort Lauderdale to Andros Island in the Bahamas Saturday morning, apparently crashing into the ocean about 17 miles off the Fort Lauderdale coast, reported the AP. There were no survivors.

Authorities lost radar contact with the plane at 9:20 am while it was on its way to the Bahamas, Coast Guard Petty Officer Jennifer Johnson said. A rescue helicopter spotted debris about 17 miles east of Fort Lauderdale.

All five aboard were Florida residents. The plane was registered to Glen Quackenbush, said FAA spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen. Quackenbush was piloting the plane.

It was not immediately known what caused the crash. A search and rescue effort continued late Saturday.
