NTSB Releases Initial Findings In Palomar Accident

Jet Came In Hot And High

We now know a little more about the fatal downing of a Cessna Citation 560 at the Palomar-McClellan Airport near San Diego last month.

The NTSB now says the aircraft was hot and high on its approach, touching down 1500 feet beyond the threshold of the 4600-foot runway. At one point, investigators say, the thrust reversers were deployed -- but retracted.

The aircraft then lifted off the runway -- but its gear and left wing impacted the localizer shack at the end of the runway. It careened down a steep hill at the end of the runway... sliding into a storage building below and bursting into flames.

One NTSB investigator told the San Diego Tribune that the aircraft was clocked at 261 miles per hour on final. Normal landing speed for the Citation is between 120 and 132 mph.

The NTSB investigation continues.
