Tornado Slams Monroe LA Airport

Photos Show Several BizJets Among The Wreckage

After a number of regional warnings about the potential for severe weather in the Southeast part of the US, Mother Nature struck... and struck hard.

One of the focal points, Monroe LA, reports damage to hundreds of homes and extensive damage to the airport in terms of buildings, hangars and aircraft.

The National Weather Service had broadcast a tornado emergency warning for Monroe, as well as surrounding communities, at 1144CDT even as a tornado was already battering the region.

This was a massive storm... with parts of it stretching from Mississippi to Louisiana. Interstates are blocked, hundreds of homes are damaged across these states, and power is out across a large part of this region.

The National Weather Service confirmed the reports of a large and dangerous tornado in Monroe, Louisiana, late Sunday morning. Damage was reported as wind gusts to 69 mph were clocked at Monroe Regional Airport.

Photographs from the airport show significant damage to multiple aircraft, including a Citation CJ3 and several other BizJets. Informal damage estimates indicate that millions of dollars of damage have been done to aircraft, alone, with one published damage estimate claiming 20-30 million in overall damage.

Mayor Jamie Mayo told local media that, “all flights at the Monroe Regional Airport are cancelled until further notice.”
