Former B-24 Pilot Makes Off-Airport Landing In Florida

Ninety-Two-Year-Old Pilot Not Injured In The Incident

A 92-year-old former WWII B-24 pilot was out for a flight in a Wag Aero Wag-a-Bond kit-built plane on Monday when was forced to make an off-airport landing in an area where homes are being build in Bradenton, FL. The pilot, who was not identified, was uninjured in the incident, according to local police.

Television Station WFLA reports that the local police responded to reports of a plane crash at midday Monday in an area known as Tidewater Preserve. When first responders arrived, they found the pilot out of the airplane making phone calls, and a damaged airplane in the grass.

Captain William Fowler of the Bradenton Police department said the pilot did a "good job" avoiding not only the homes under construction but traffic on a nearby street. "You'd be amazed at the people that were in the area when this actually happened," Fowler said.

One witness, Rory Gibson, said the plane looked like it was going to impact a building where a framing crew was working, but the pilot was able to correct and fly over the building and land in the grass.
