Solar Impulse Team Eyes Med Crossing

Flight Would Be Next Tuneup For Circumnavigation Attempt

The Solar Impulse team is reportedly considering an attempt to cross the Mediterranean sea next year as a tuneup to its planned 2014 circumnavigation attempt.

Pilot Andre Borschberg said the solar-powered airplane's successful flight to France for the Paris Air Show has given the team the confidence to consider a flight to Morocco in 2012. The Associated Press reports that Borschberg said on a satellite linkup that the team would soon like to be able to accomplish flights lasting two days on solar power alone, which would certainly be a challenge for a single pilot on board.

Borschberg was bringing the aircraft back to its home airfield in Payenre, Switzerland following the Paris Air Show. On the Solar Impulse website, the team reports that the airplane landed back in Payerne July third, and that the flight to Paris marked the end of the European phase of the solar flights campaign.
