Police Confirm Mechanical Failure Caused Last Week's WA Ultralight Accident

Elevator Controls Not Fully Connected

Although the FAA and NTSB aren't looking into what caused a fatal accident last week involving a Mini Max 1100 in the Puget Sound area of Washington state... police looking into the accident say they have a pretty good idea what happened.

As Aero-News reported, firefighter Pat Rose was at the controls of the ultralight plane (file photo of type, right) on the morning of July 6, when it crashed onto an empty hangar at William Fairchild International Airport in Port Angeles, WA.

Police say the problem was with the plane's elevator controls... specifically, that the fasteners holding the elevator control lines to the control yoke were unsecured, possibly coming lose during Rose's flight around the pattern.

Witnesses say the plane went into steep dive just before impact... and that Rose, who was flying the plane for a friend, appeared to be pulling back on the controls in vain as the plane went down.
