UN Suspends Helicopter Flights Over Sudan

One Aircraft Came Under Fire Near Kadugli Airport

Following an incident in which a United Nations helicopter was fired on approaching Kadugli airport in Sudan, the body has suspended helicopter flights between the heavily-militarized regions of South Kordofan and Abyei.

The Sudan Tribune reports that the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in a weekly report that the incident occurred on February 16 as the helo made an approach to the airport. The flight had originated in the Abyei region.

On inspection, the aircraft was found to have a bullet hole in its fuselage. No one was injured in the incident. “Consequently, UN flights between Abyei and Kadugli have been suspended pending an investigation” OCHA’s bulletin stated.

The territory is disputed, claimed by both Sudan and South Sudan. It is currently controlled by the Sudanese army.
