Microburst At Huntsville Airshow Claims One, Injures 12

Sunday Storm Toppled Tents, Cancels Show

A strong, isolated thunderstorm is being blamed for a sudden microburst in the middle of the Huntsville International Airport Airshow Sunday afternoon claiming the life of one child and injuring 12 others.

The Associated Press reported the microburst occurred at 1345 local time Sunday afternoon. A five-year-old boy was lost when witnesses reported a generator fell over onto him. Another child was taken to Huntsville Hospital in critical condition. Eleven others were treated for injuries including lacerations and fractures and released according to Huntsville Hospital spokeswoman Pam Sparks.

The strong winds toppled 15 tents, damaged the Virtual Army Experience exhibit and picked up and overturned the airshow announcers stand.

A meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Huntsville said winds measured up to 48 mph during the storm.
