Heritage Flights Wow New Yorkers...

While there were a few minutes of concern from unwary New Yorkers due to the many former and current military aircraft in their skies for the Memorial Day weekend, the displays provided an amazing view of the extraordinary aerial power this nation may muster when freedom is threatened.

Lt. Col. Todd Oliver (above) scans the New York City skyline during a media flight over the famous city on Thursday, May 25, 2006. Colonel Oliver was piloting a C-130 Hercules, the support aircraft for "Heritage Flight" pilots flying in the Jones Beach Air Show on Long Island. Heritage Flight formations are designed to show generations of fighter aircraft history. The colonel is from the Rhode Island Air National Guard.

A P-51 Mustang, flown by Jim Beasley; an F-16 Fighting Falcon, flown by Maj. Dax Cornelius from Hill Air Force Base, Utah; an F-15 Eagle, flown by Capt. Tony Bierenkoven from Eglin AFB, Fla.; and an A-10 Thunderbolt II, flown by Capt. Jeff Yost of Pope AFB, N.C., fly over New York City on Thursday, May 25, 2006.
