Huey Down In Philippines

Nine Lost In Mishap

A Filipino military helicopter carrying a crew of four and five scientists scouting possible home sites near a volcano went down on Thursday. All nine were reportedly killed.

Rescue teams were flown into the crash site, on the slopes of Mount Namal, some 60 miles north of Manila. They were able to recover all nine bodies.

Among the victims abpard the Bell UH1-B were four scientists from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology. They were on a state-sponsored mission to look for possible housing sites in an area recently hit by devastating mudslides.

“The aircraft exploded but we don’t know if it was upon impact or while in mid-air,” said Senior Inspector Pablo Cruz, police chief of Gabaldon, who was among the first to reach the crash scene. He was quoted by the Khaleej Times.
