No More Free Ride For New Mexico's Blind Students

Governor's New Plane To Blame

Update 06.25.05, 0324: Public pressure has had an effect and the Governor's office is NOW reporting that these students will get their rides after all.

What was seen as good news in the office of New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson has turned out to be sour grapes for students at the state's School for the Blind in Alamogordo. They're going to have to find another way to get home on the weekends.

As ANN reported extensively, Richardson has been on a two-year quest for a new aircraft -- a replacement for his worn and illegally-modified 1966 Aero-Commander. Earlier this month, the New Mexico Legislature authorized the purchase of a $5.4 million Cessna Citation Bravo.

But because the purchase mandated a reduction in the state's civil aircraft fleet, it means no more free rides for the blind students. They've been flying one of the state's other aircraft for a decade.

Ironically, in its efforts to purchase a new aircraft, the Richardson administration included the transportation of blind students as part of the justification.

The school is now hunting for bids from commercial charter operations to keep those kids flying.
