Next Orbital ATK Launch To ISS Delayed

Will Not Fly Until September At The Earliest

The next ISS resupply mission by Virginia-based Orbital ATK has been pushed into September, according to the company.

Orbital ATK had originally planned to launch a Cygnus cargo vessel atop an Antares rocket this month, marking a return to flight following a two-year hiatus. The company grounded its Antares rockets following an incident in October 2014 in which an Antares rocket exploded on liftoff at Wallops Island, VA.

The Associated Press reports that Orbital said Wednesday that it needs more time to inspect and test the rocket before committing to a launch date. It also must fit into the docking schedule at ISS.

Orbital has launched Cygnus cargo ships to ISS using boosters from other companies at Cape Canaveral to fulfill its contractual obligations to NASA while it worked on the Antares system, but the company is now looking to get back on track with launches from Wallops Island in Virginia aboard its own boosters.
