EPS Diesel: Still Living The Dream

Engine Has Accumulated Nearly 1,000 Hours During Testing

By: Gene Yarbrough

EPS Diesel once again updated the public on their diesel engine development at AirVenture 2018. The Wisconsin company creating an aviation diesel powerplant has studiously reported on progress and setbacks in the challenging task of new engine development for several years now. The company stated that as of this year their testing has accumulated just shy of 1000 hrs and is performing as expected. Targeting the 320-450 hp market, the engine is designed to operate on diesel, jet A, and kerosene fuels.

The engine is a clean sheet design featuring an all steel crankcase and pistons, as opposed to those components typically of aluminum in many other engines and features a Bosch Ignitions system. The company credits modern manufacturing techniques and advanced materials in helping keep the weight in a manageable range for aviation purposes. EPS Diesel expects a TBO of 3000 hrs from the flat Vee configuration.

The engines have been installed on several airframes for real world testing including an SR22. The company was reluctant to disclose either expected dates of availability or cost.

With the improving economy and any luck EPS will be able to realize their goal and bring this engine to market.
